This section only provides information on ADHD from proven and well-known credible sources. Let's eliminate fact from fiction! What is ADHD? Get the real info on ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder, also known as ADD or ADHD, is often confused with hyperactivity. In fact, many people think you can't have ADD if you don't exhibit motor hyperactivity. This is an incorrect assumption resulting from incomplete info on ADHD and partly the reason why fewer women are diagnosed than men - women are more likely to have the inattentive type and exhibit less motor hyperactivity. It is also the reason why so few adults with ADHD get diagnosed (only 1 in 10 adults with ADHD are diagnosed). In adulthood the physical hyperactivity often subsides but is replaced by an internal or cognitive hyperactivity. ADHDers often describe this as a large number of thoughts coming in at the same time. They start focusing on one thought but then another one pops in and so they change their focus.
Most people exhibit some ADD-like traits in certain situations. It only becomes attention deficit disorder when it negatively affects a person's quality of life. Among the info on ADHD that you need to accurately judge the presence of ADHD are recognizing the signs and symptoms.
ADHD Signs and Symptoms
Among the most common complaints people with ADD have are:- being and feeling disorganized,
- having difficulty paying attention (especially to things that don't interest them),
- being fidgety,
- having great difficulty with getting started in projects or staying on task,
- having difficulty with managing their time which lead to chronic lateness,
- the inability the sustain focus for any length of time,
- losing things all the time,
- forgetting details or appointments,
- impulsivity that leads to poor decision-making,
- chronic procrastination and perfectionism,
- and risk taking and more.
The point to remember is that ADHD is not about a deficit in attention, it is actually a deficit in the ability to control attention, impulsivity and hyperactive tendencies. In addition, while ADHDers may have problems with keeping their attention on a conversation or on an activity they find boring, when they are involved in an activity of interest or that is stimulating to them or in which they exhibit strengths, they can actually hyperfocus, which is the ability to focus on an activity to the exclusion of everything else. Basically what this means is that ADHD is also situational.
Many people who read the symptoms of ADHD may think that everyone has ADHD because most people experience these symptoms to some degree. What you need to understand is that in ADHDers, the symptoms are so numerous and touch so many aspects of their lives that they impact very negatively on their quality of life.
This can be extremely frustrating because ADHDers don't lack in intelligence and strengths. Just like everyone else you will find some with a wide range of intellectual capacities. They have the same capacity or potential as anyone else but the fact that their brain wiring works differently from how society expects us to function, means that they don't fit in and can't achieve their amazing potential.
Having lived with ADHD through my close contacts with family members and through my coaching practice, I have found that a large number of ADHDers are extremely creative out-of-the-box thinkers or highly ambitious entrepreneurs.

Separating Fact from Fiction with credible info on ADHD
While ADHDers could thrive with the implementation of strategies and systems at work, home and in social environments, they often worry about mentioning their ADHD to anyone else because the world around them doesn't have the real info on ADHD and seems to have been brainwashed by the media into thinking that ADHD does not exist and that it is being used as a crutch for lazy or stupid people. This is simply not at all true. First, the majority of ADHDers I know work harder than the average person because they always feel they have to do more just to compensate for their "flaws". Second, there are numerous brilliant people who have achieved a great deal of success despite having been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.
A few examples are David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airlines AND the inventor of the electronic plane ticket. Just think back to when electronic tickets were not possible. What an amazing accomplishment. Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinkos, is a diagnosed ADHDer who put his out-of-the-box thinking to work to create services for small businesses in the US. Others who lived before our time likely had ADHD.
Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison exhibited many ADHD signs if we base ourselves on their life stories, their achievements and the strategies they used to become successful. Whether or not they had ADHD, we will never know since they can't be diagnosed, but exhibiting some of the worse signs of ADHD, didn't stop them. So obviously ADHD is not a scapegoat used by stupid people.
You don't have to take my word when it comes to the existence of ADHD. Several researchers confirm that Attention Deficit Disorder is a real condition that affects adults as well as children.
